History

Back in the early 1990's, as a magician, I had a desire to form some kind of local magic group. I had a few magician friends that got together at my house. We discussed magic on many levels. We learned new tricks, helped those who had questions about a routine, stage presentation, performance, slight of hand and even inventing and building tricks and illusions. Unfortunately this did not last very long.

Back in 2004, I did a performance at the Ogden Utah amphitheatre. It was very successful. I had many comments from members of the audience about where to learn magic. I decided to resurrect the old group.

I called my friend Steve Bauter who I have known for many years as a close friend and a clown magician, BOBO the clown. We both knew others interested in magic and so we made a few phone calls. At our first meeting, Steve and I had 3 others join us. Rob Johnston, Dustin Moss and Tyler Thornton. There it was decided. The Northern Utah Magic Association was formed!

We presented a magic gala in 2005 entitled "Escape From Reality". We introduced our association and had others sign up to join. We not only have an adult group but a Jr. group as well.

Objectives

NUMA has a number of objectives:

Help young magicians - Many times young people want to learn magic. Most of the inexpensive tricks are very simple. However, as their interest increases, the level of difficulty increases. We also find that many instructions that come with tricks can be very vague or they may say something like: "Next, do the double lift". If you do not know what the double lift is, then you can't do the trick. We are committed to help these young magi learn, understand and perform the things they want to learn.

Further the art of magic - Magic is wonderful! Everyone who watches it enjoys it. Unfortunately there are many who don't have the opportunity to see magic. We make ourselves available to perform. We perform for many different occasions. Many time the performances are voluntary as with our annual NUMA ESCAPE FROM REALITY program.

Promote safety - Magic includes many elements. One such element is the escapist. Escapes can at times be very dangerous. We help each other learn the importance of safety when doing escapes and offer suggestions.

Make friends and have fun - The new associations we make at our meetings provide the opportunity to have a blast with people you share your interest with. Learning and practicing on family and friends can at times be embarrassing when things go wrong. NUMA meetings provide a place where, when things go wrong, we laugh and learn in a non threatening situation.
